Although the penetrant can be used on both ferrous and non-ferrous materials, magnetic particle inspection is frequently recommended for ferrous components since it can identify subsurface defects. Penetrant testing is used to find flaws such as porosity, in-service fatigue fractures, and hairline cracks in castings, forgings, and welded surfaces.
